Ralph McQuarrie | Conceptual Designer | Illustrator

Ralph Angus McQuarrie was born on 13 June 1929 in Gary, Indiana and moved to California in the 1960s were he designed film posters and CBS News coverage animations of the Apollo space program.

Ralph McQuarrie became a conceptual designer and illustrator who designed many of the Star Wars characters, including Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO. He also worked as the conceptual designer on the film’s two sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Ralph McQuarrie also designed the alien ships in Steven Spielberg’s films Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and the 1985 film Cocoon which earned him the Academy Award for Visual Effects.

Ralph McQuarrie also worked on Battlestar Galactica, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Jurassic Park.

World Design Capital for 2014 - Cape Town

Cape Town beat Dublin and Bilbao to be named World Design Capital for 2014.

In October 2011 at the International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress in Taipei, the World Design Capital for 2014 title was awarded to Cape Town.

This title will result in a year-long program of design events that will focus on social, economic and cultural transformation.

Cape Town‘s bid was based on its urban development plans.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille accepted the award on behalf of Cape Town.

In March 2011 a 465-page bid book was formally submitted to the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) in Canada, with the theme, “Live Design. Transform Life”.

Statue of Liberty - Design Patent

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous design patents.

US Patent D11,023 was issued to Auguste Bartholdi on the 18th of February 1879 for the design of a Statue of Liberty Enlightening The World.

Small replica statues were sold to help raise money for the construction of the statue in New York Harbor.

The Statue of Liberty was modeled after Auguste Bartholdi’s mother and wife.

America was responsible for building the pedestal.

France was responsible for building the statue and assembling it in the United States.

Construction of the Statue of Liberty began in 1875 and was completed nine years later in 1884.

Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, planned the skeletal framework for the Statue of Liberty.

The completed statue had to be transported from France to the United States.

214 Crates containing the Statue of Liberty left France in July 1884.

About a year later, on the 19th of June 1885 The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor.

After 4 months of reassembling the statue, it was completed.

Jonathan Ive is best known as the designer and the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. He was born February 1967 in London and studied Industrial Design at Northumbria University.

He is the leading designer and conceptual mind behind the iMac, PowerBook G4, G4 Cube, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Jonathan Ive was hired in 1992 by Apple after a Tangerine consultancy with Apple.

He was named Senior Vice President in 1997 after the return of Steve Job. Since then he has headed the Industrial Design team responsible for most of the company’s successful products.

1999
He was named to the MIT Technology Review TR100 as one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35.

2005
The British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, was revealed as being an iPod owner.

2007
He received the 2007 National Design Award in the product design category for his work on the iPhone.

2008
He was awarded the MDA Personal Achievement award for the design of the iPhone.

2009
He received an honorary doctorate from the Rhode Island School of Design and was named Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art.

2010
Fortune named him as the “world’s smartest designer” for his work on Apple products.

Jonathan Ive has over 300 design patents to his name.

In 1998 the iMac computer changed Apple. A new design era for Apple which started because of Jonathan Ive.

At the heart of Jonathan Ive’s design inspiration lies Dieter Rams. His designs influenced every single hardware and user-interface design at Apple.

Dieter Rams was the industrial designer for Braun, designing most of their electronic products during the ’50s and ’60s. These designs hold all the clues to Apple products.

Emerging Creatives Programme | Design Indaba Expo 2012

2012 Design Indaba Expo

The Emerging Creatives Programme is now open to designers wishing to earn a spot on the explo floor at the Design Indaba Expo 2012.

Design Indaba Expo takes place 2 – 4 March 2012 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Submission deadline for the programme is Tuesday 15 November 2011.

The selected creatives will have:

  1. Full sponsorship to showcase their creative work at the Design Indaba Expo 2012
  2. A Ticket to attend the Young Designers Simulcast of the Design Indaba Conference (28 February – 2 March 2012)

The Emerging Creatives Programme is sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture.
